This is real reporting. Question: How many people taking a similar approach to news would it take to fully collapse the established media ecosystem that provides narrative versus facts and observation?

I live in Chicago and the same thing happened to me during the ICE operation. Many friends from California and even the suburbs of the city kept asking me if I was okay, if things were out of hand, if I was thinking of leaving. In that case, they were acting as if the operation was an actual war, which those of you in Dubai can understand is simply nonsense. I never noticed the raids, the city was quiet except where the protests were happening, and all of us, including most immigrants, lived out regular lives. The spread of sensationalism and the desire for failure of the city on the past of so many is curious to me. I sense that same negative desire for Dubai. I hope this conflict ends soon and doesn't turn into what the doomsday cults long for.

Thanks Nicole. People forget that what you see on the news and social media is usually less than 0.1% of what's going on in a place. It creates a schism where something can simultaneously be true (as in it is occurring) but massively misleading (it is not representative of the norm). The city and nation will survive and thrive. I appreciate the kind words.

I’m a COVID survivor, now an Iran crisis survivor thus far. What's next?

p.s. Schadenfreude is a great word; I wonder about its etymology. Stay blessed, bro, insightful and truthful from a dude on the ground.

ZUBY:'s avatar

🙏🏾 German loan word. Very literal etymology like all German.

Thank you for the info. We were supposed to start a tour in Dubai in a couple months but I am afraid the tour operator will cancel it. I hope things get back to normal so we can visit your beautiful country.

ZUBY:'s avatar

Hopefully things will be back to normal by then.

Praying for your safety, and for everyone in the path of Iran's retaliatory efforts. Hopefully they will end very soon

True. I can confirm this.

You in the city as well?

Alex Smirnou's avatar

In the UAE. In Ras Al Khaimah.

How is it in RAK?

Alex Smirnou's avatar

Life goes on: people are aware, but no panic, no issues with any products in the supermarkets (large or small), iftars continue but the safety protocols are observed.

Our church here meets online. The prayer hours for the country & peace additionally take place in the dedicated timing several times a week.

The interceptions are quite loud here, but no major accidents (besides the one reported in the news with debris falling, but no casualties). Everyone I know & myself, stayed in RAK, noone left the country. I am sure this phase will pass making the UAE much stronger.

Always appreciate your grounded voice in times increased tension and chaos. It is totally crazy how many different sources of information and agendas seem to be at play. The double-edged sword of living in the age of information. Stay safe!
