"In my observation, those who most confidently boast about their city or nation being ‘the best’ are usually those who have never left it."

This is spot on!! Great read as always!

It makes me think of what Julie Bogart says about the levels of learning- reading, experience, and encounter. Reading is the safest way to learn (you can protect your own biases this way). Experiences are deeper because you need to be active and engaging. But encounter causes you to deal with your preconceptions and puts you more at risk for being wrong. Staying in our bubbles causes us to be cocky--getting out of them makes us face our own bs and hopefully teaches us humility. Great read, Zuby!

Glad you enjoyed it! I haven't heard of it laid out that way but it makes complete sense.

You are very accurate, Zuby. Travel changes your life for the better. It's especially valuable to do it while you're young.

Besides the advantages you've mentioned, there is a change in the way a "travelled person" feels about themselves. They literally FEEL more knowledgeable, and sophisticated. They can relate to humanity as a species with it's commonalities at the forefront. Their sense of belonging to a species literally makes them bigger as an individual. I can't think of a single reason NOT to travel. Whatever is keeping you locked into the a single place, change it !!!

Travel out of the US reminds me a bit of the midwit curve:

Never travel: 'America is the best'

Travel to a few countries: 'America is the worst'

Travel to a lot of countries: 'America is the best'
